Future Plans
Cervical Cancer Narrative Stories
The Program
The Cervical Cancer Narrative Stories are a 3-hour weekly communication outreach program for members of the Haitian Community in Miami-Dade County, Florida, where women with interest in cervical cancer, or have been diagnosed with cervical cancer can come and talk about issues affecting their lives. The program is also available to all women. There are no specific requirements to adhere to the English language. The participants are free to express themselves, either in English, Creole, French, or Spanish. The organizational staff is multilingual.
The program will last 6 months. It is conceived as a free format program where participants, after registering, will enter a cozy room to talk about the disease, and its impact on their daily lives. Light snacks and water will be offered. A team of 1 doctoral student in conflict analysis and resolution from Nova Southeastern University, a researcher in mind-body medicine, and a volunteer psychologist will help facilitate the narrative processes, in a very congenial manner.
At the end of each cervical cancer narrative session, the participants will be invited to go to a soft music and relaxation room to reduce stressors. There will be a debriefing session by the staff after the participants leave the premises, and salient analyses will be highlighted. The researcher has a post-graduate certificate in conflict analysis and resolution, is a medical doctor and currently pursuing a Ph.D in Mind-Body Medicine. He will serve as the program coordinator.
At the end of the 6 months program, the participants will be asked to complete a survey about their experiences in the program. It is anticipated that the organization will create an oral tradition as a therapeutic approach for the participants to better understand their communications, concerns and fear. Such tradition will create a sense of ownership (my narrative story or histwa pam in Haitian Creole). Mind-Body Medicine therapies will help frame alternative interventions or treatments associated with the narrative stories The cervical cancer narrative program may lead to further grant funding and allow for larger scales initiatives.
LEARNING SPACE CENTER
Positive Action Community Center, Inc., plans to create a "Learning Space Center" where individuals can come to get solutions for their problems, and at the same token find an opportunity to learn about their own culture, listen to music, read, thus preserving their cultural heritage. A library with 150,000 books, a social media room are intended to that effect, and will serve as a learning platform. We envision a culture of learning, an academic forum where intellectuals can gather to share and promote knowledge. We plan to have a story telling room for children, and a research room for academics. We hope to become a think thank organization on culture, social policy, and community development strategies in 10 years. We also plan to create the Positive Action Community Center, Inc. Nursing School.
